Tomorrow is the Peruvian presidential election with mandatory participation. We've seen lots of campaigning in the streets: youngsters handing out flyers, auto caravan parades with loudspeakers promising better times, and dudes dressed in animal suits. I hope the guinea pig wins.
The weekend of voting day also means prohibition on sales of alcohol. Bars and clubs are closed, which began Thursday at midnight, and liquor stores have ceased operation until the end of voting on Sunday. Apparently, you can still BE drunk, you just can't buy any new shiz.
About 45 minutes away in Mollendo, riots have broken out over the Tia Maria mine project that is purported to plan a diversion of water from agriculture and will represent a massive pollution effort. I am guessing the Guinea Pig would be against this project, but it's a heavy political issue and very local for us.
My boyfriend is next to me, totally entranced watching Dumbo in Spanish. I'm going to join him. He's just about to fly for the first time.
