Movie Review: Chimpanzee (spoiler alert)

I've always wanted a pet chimp and this film solidified that desire for me. Except for the part where they hunt smaller cuter monkeys and then eat them, chimpanzees are awesome.

Chimpanzee is a documentary produced by Disney that chronicles a typical season in the life of a chimp tribe in Africa. The scenery is gorgeous and the "characters" are positively enthralling. They even made a rival band of chimpanzees seem like evil goons. There is this adorable little baby chimp named Oscar who swings around and eats and tries to crack nuts with his weak little baby arms and it's just. . . *sigh* precious. You see baby chimps hopping around and being adorable, nap time, a day in the life of a chimp and it just makes you want to live with them (except they are probably stronger than me and could rip my head off with pure brute strength).

Cameras cut to evil goon squad led by Scar, who just wants to steal Oscar's family's food! He's big and ugly and mean and you only see big dominant males as part of his tribe. In that case, they must be evil - no babies! Scar attacks the tribe and Oscar's mother is killed. . . *sniff sniff* it was just so. . . *sniff sniff sob* sad because he's just a baby and *sniff sniff wahhhhh* - I cried a lot during this part - loudly and shamelessly. It was incredibly moving watching Oscar look for his mother and then attempt to fend for himself unsuccessfully. Unfortunately, all of my napkins were greasy from the buttery popcorn I'd eaten and when I blew my nose, I may have caused an acne break-out because butter isn't good for my skin.

I love chimpanzees because they know things I don't know - like sign language. Go see this film, it's beautiful and it supports chimps in the wild and chimps are pretty awesome. This is baby Oscar:
