I was afraid to drive around on the snowy streets and realized it took hours for the roads to get plowed. I generally don't notice these things because I usually walk everywhere, but now that I've joined the world of motorists I'm on to it just like everyone else. I even developed a healthy sense of road rage and I like to honk my horn and shake my fist at little kids who ride bicycles or roller blades too close to the street. JKR says that if a newspaper article were ever written about me it would be titled "Old Woman Yells At Cloud"
I'm not going to let the snow get me too bummed because I'm heading off to Los Angeles for a week-long conference starting on Sunday. I'm excited to reconnect with the city where I was an Americorps VISTA and if you don't know what VISTA means, it stands for Volunteers in Service To America. This is an anti-poverty program in which volunteers work for free for a non-profit or state agency serving those living below poverty level and you agree to take a vow of poverty to truly understand their situation. I did this in Los Angeles for a year, working for an agency helping people with next to nothing. I didn't drive, but I did have an awesome pink bicycle with a bell and a basket that I'd get on and ride around the ghetto waving at groups of Latino men lounging around ice cream trucks that didn't sell any ice cream. I developed a strong sense of street cred while there and my roommates, Princess Shy and D.J. Needles, liked to call me by my rapper name: Goldiggah. What what y'all!
I'm looking forward to the trip and potentially avoiding more disgusting smelly snow, but I'll miss sleeping next to JKR as we snore lovingly into one another's faces. He snores because through years of playing hockey and then boxing, his nose has been broken about 7 or 8 times. I snore because I'm part oagre. Ruth Bader Catsburg will be staying with her aunts Kate and Lisa - we're a progressive family.
