Checks And Balances Used To Mean Something

Back in my day, heads of lettuce were a nickel! Women wore skirts and men wrote checks!

I've been following the reports about gay marriage arguments being made before the Supreme Court both for and against Proposition 8 - a California rule passed in 2008 banning gay marriage. It's unfortunate that our legal and electoral system are such that the majority gets to vote on the rights of a minority, but we haven't fixed that yet.

Justice Alito asked "You want us to step in and assess the effects of this institution, which is newer than cellphones and/or the Internet?"

Well, no, Justice Alito, you stupid moron, gay relationships are not a new institution. Gay couples have lived together for centuries - what's so new about that? There are no NEW ramifications to long-term gay relationships, let's be clear.

Marriage is no longer a religious institution, it's purely a legal contract. Churches and Temples still have the right to refuse to participate in any marriage ceremony - that's why we all have access to Justices of the Peace for shotgun weddings, atheists and the cheap. Proposition 8 and other gay marriage barriers block gay couples from entering into legal contracts with one another and deny them the basic protections marriage provides for their children. If they get divorced, those children are even more protected when they gain the ability to play one parent off of the other and incite massive guilt trips that lead to better toys, more expensive clothes and control over adults and their wallets.

When I make my husband dig items out of the trash, rinse them off and put them in the recycle bin, it's because I care about future generations and I don't want to leave a mess behind. I'm not gay, but my kids might be. Why do we want to saddle another generation with an ugly and embarrassing civil rights battle? It's tedious listening to people argue about why others don't deserve certain rights and privileges that many take for granted. If Elizabeth Taylor were alive today, I bet she'd forfeit at least three of her marriages so that a few gay couples could wed.
